Brian Stann vs Alessio Sakara booked for April 14 at UFC on FUEL TV 2 in Sweden

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) gets another main card match-up for its upcoming UFC on FUEL TV 2 fight card, the second entry into the cable television network’s live mixed martial arts (MMA) programming on April 14 at the Ericsson Globe Arena in Stockholm, Sweden.

Hard-hitting middleweight Brian Stann will try to get back into the win column when he takes on former Italian boxer Alessio Sakara, according to a report from MMA NYTT.

Stann (11-4) saw his three-fight win streak come to an abrupt halt at the hands of Chael Sonnen, who cut off the oxygen at UFC 136: “Edgar vs. Maynard 3″ back in October 2010.

Sakara (15-8) is also coming off a loss, a three round beatdown at the expense of Chris Weidman last March as part of the UFC on Versus 3 event in Louisville, Kentucky.

Here’s how the UFC on FUEL TV fight card is shaping up:

Star-divide

170 lbs.: DaMarques Johnson vs. John Maguire
185 lbs.: Francis Carmont vs. Magnus Cedenblad
170 lbs.: Papy Abedi vs. James Head
185 lbs.: Alessio Sakara vs. Brian Stann

Nate Diaz Beats Up Donald Cerrone at UFC 141

The co-main event of the UFC 141: “Lesnar vs. Overeem” pay-per-view taking place tonight (Fri., Dec. 30, 2011) at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, featured a highly anticipated match-up between two top lightweight contenders.

Highly anticipated because Nate Diaz and Donald Cerrone created plenty of hype for the bout by getting into it with each other at both a UFC gym a few months ago and at the pre-fight press conference. This one felt personal heading in. But did it deliver inside the cage?

You bet your ass it did.

Diaz put in what was easily one of the best performances of his career, absolutely overwhelming “Cowboy” en route to a unanimous decision win. He might not be fighting for the title anytime soon but he certainly sent Cerrone to the back of the pack. In style.

Star-divide

You knew it was going to be intense when Cerrone kicked things off by flipping Diaz off at the staredown. True to his word, Cerrone went running across the cage as soon as Herb Dean told them to get busy. Both guys were swinging big punches but no one was landing.

A short clinch didn’t lead to much and they disengaged before finally slowing down. It didn’t last long, though, as Diaz employed the typical Diaz game plan of throwing punches in bunches. It was working, too, as “Cowboy” was just eating punch after punch.

Cerrone seemed content to land low leg kicks while Diaz simply kept the pressure on. By the time the first round was done, Greg Jackson was telling Cerrone in his corner that he was getting overwhelmed.

Talk about an understatement.

The second round featured a whole lot of Cerrone kicking Diaz’s legs out from underneath, which made the crowd “oh” and “ah” but didn’t exactly make for a sound strategy to win the fight.

A head kick finally landed clean about halfway through but as luck would have it, “Cowboy” fell down and was unable to capitalize on his short burst of effective offense.

It wasn’t long after that Diaz went back to brutalizing him. By the time round two was over, Cerrone had clawed his way back into the bout but volume was clearly still on the Stockton slugger’s side.

Cardiovascular conditioning could be the most underrated aspect of a fighter’s game and in the third round, Diaz had it while Cerrone looked tired. Whether that was because his tank was simply running dry or he was punched so many times he was fading didn’t quite matter.

Cerrone continued to sweep the leg in the final frame but as good as that looks and sounds on TV, it’s not a winning fight strategy. Diaz kept up the pace and pressure that was winning him the fight in the first two rounds and while Cerrone kept it close, Diaz was simply too much.

UFC 141: Brock Lesnar’s ‘people’ had an issue with Alistair Overeem training with Randy Couture

After parting ways with long-time training camp Golden Glory because of a “breach of trust,” Alistair Overeemmade the move stateside from his native Holland in search of a new gym that he could call home and help him prepare for his upcoming bout against Brock Lesnar tomorrow night (Dec. 30, 2011) at UFC 141 in Las Vegas, Nevada.

After making a brief stop at Mark Munoz’s Reign Training Center in Orange County, Calif., the “Demolition Man” landed at former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) heavyweight (and light heavyweight) championRandy Couture’s Xtreme Couture in “Sin City.”

It seemed like a match made in mixed martial arts (MMA) heaven as Overeem aligned himself with the famed camp that houses such stars as Gray MaynardForrest Griffin and of course, “The Natural.” However, the union was short lived, as Overeem had to suddenly move his training camp back to Holland to care for his ailing mother.

And even though that may be the primary reason for leaving, Gil Martinez — head trainer at Xtreme Couture — tells Fightline.com that there was more to the story with the former Strikeforce heavyweight champion training at the gym.

Check it out:

Star-divide

“There were some issues with Alistair training at Xtreme Couture because Randy, after he fought Brock, trained with him and signed a disclosure with them. So even though Randy isn’t at the gym, Brock’s people made it an issue so Overeem ended up not finishing his training here.”

Lesnar, who has his own training facilities with DeathClutch Gym, has often spent time training at Couture’s Las Vegas-based gym since defeating the UFC hall of Famer at UFC 91 back in 2008.

Apparently, Team Lesnar wasn’t too fond of the idea of its upcoming opponents sharing the same trainers and facilities as them, which added to the Dutchman’s untimely departure. Regardless of the abrupt changes, Alistair Overeem maintains that no distraction will affect his performance Friday night as he makes his much anticipated debut in the world’s pre-eminent MMA promotion.

Or will it?

Lesnar admitted that he “doesn’t care” what Overeem did or does prior to their monstrous New Year’s Eve weekend clash.

Actions speak louder than words.

UFC 141 fight card: Manny Gamburyan vs Diego Nunes brings featherweight fury back to Las Vegas

Though the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) featherweight division isn’t as deep as some of the other weight classes, it is still highly unlikely the promotion would keep someone around if they weren’t performing.

Diego Nunes and Manny Gamburyan are looking to stay away from the proverbial axe by avoiding back-to-back losses inside the Octagon.

With nothing guaranteed, especially in the UFC, both featherweights look to prolong their stay with the world’s preeminent mixed martial arts (MMA) promotion by earning a win at UFC 141 and impressing their Zuffa employers in the process.

Diego Nunes is coming off a valiant effort against seasoned veteran Kenny Florian at UFC 131 back in June. Florian was awarded the unanimous decision victory and earned a title shot against Nunes training partner, Jose Aldo. In the process, “The Gun” saw his three fight win streak come to an end.

Nunes hopes to bounce back and get another streak going against another former World Extreme Cagefighting(WEC) colleague, Manny Gamburyan, who is currently on a two fight skid.

Star-divide

After being knocked out by Jose Aldo in his final fight in the WEC organization, which was for “Junior’s” 145-pound title, Gamburyan found his way back into the ranks of the UFC looking to make a better run than he had in his first go-round with the organization.

No such luck.

In his first fight back with the UFC, “Manvil” lost to Tyson Griffin via unanimous decision at UFC Live: “Kongo vs. Barry,” picking up right where he left off.

Now, both featherweights look to stop their woes by earning a much needed victory this Friday (Dec. 30, 2011) at UFC 141: “Lesnar vs. Overeem.” With their backs against the wall, expect Nunes and Gamburyan to fight their way out of a predicament fighters don’t like to find themselves in: facing a possible pink slip.

Which featherweight will be guaranteed a spot in the UFC’s roster and who will be hoping for another opportunity to prove they belong in 2012?
